If you ever find yourself in Canada, then you need to visit Algonquin Provincial Park. When I was looking at booking my trip with Trek America, it was the days and activities planned in Algonquin that helped sway me to the Canadian Pioneer. Situated in the providence of Ontario, Algonquin spans over 3000 miles and holds over 1500 lakes.
It is truly a special and magical place.
Algonquin is just remarkable. It's hard to put into words how special it is. My friends and I felt great while we were there, it just has a certain feeling to it that's so hard to articulate. It's absolutely gorgeous. You can drive for miles without seeing another car or anyone for that matter. There are trees everywhere, they smell amazing and you just become so aware of your surroundings. One night we did one of the hiking trails and came across some of the most beautiful places that are completely hidden otherwise. We sat on sand and laughed and talked while we watched one of the most amazing sunsets I've ever witnessed. We did a five hour canoe trip on Canoe Lake that was literally incredible. It was all just completely beautiful, stunning, magnificent. The trees were a gorgeous shade of green and you could see the reflection in the water.
One of the things I loved about Algonquin is how disconnected from everything you are. There is no phone service and no wifi, you are truly cut off from the world. It's amazing.
I don't know about you, but I'm definitely guilty of spending too much time on my phone. I endlessly scroll through the same social media apps, mostly out of boredom, but I continue to do it anyway. While in Algonquin, I literally couldn't do this. It was a total detox, there was no need to constantly be checking my phone, no need to constantly be on my phone. And actually, I found that I didn't want to be. Instead of being half there and half somewhere else, instead of checking the news or scrolling through Instagram and Twitter every few hours, I was completely present in everything I was doing.
There was nothing to do other than truly enjoy myself, have genuine conversations with the people I was with and enjoy my time with them. I was fully there in each moment, there to appreciate the beauty of the place I was in, there to appreciate the time with my friends and there to appreciate the disconnect from the world.
While I still used my phone to take pictures of the amazing landscape, it wasn't constantly glued to my hand. When I look back at those pictures, I remember how much happiness and laughter there was, while also being reminded of how beautiful Algonquin is. Being disconnected in that sense allows you time to think, really think, about the things that matter and are important to you. Things you want more of in your life and things want to change or leave behind. Algonquin is huge and it really put into perspective how big the world is and how small I am in comparison. The world is amazing and there is so much to see. So that's what I plan on doing.
Love,
Brogan
